SARUA Programme on Climate Change and Sustainable Development invitation to Workshop 1

Dear Friend of SARUA

We are proud to invite you to a series of interactive workshops following the completion of our master’s Curriculum in Climate Change and Sustainable Development. Indeed, we will be hosting a total of five workshops to build capacity in this extremely critical aspect of growth for our SADC region, and, especially, within our SADC HEIs.

The workshops follow a sequential approach, and we propose that, if possible, you attend all three workshops below to obtain maximum benefit.

Workshops on Curriculum design and implementation

Workshop 1: Preparation for implementation.
CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK OF THE REVISED SOUTHERN AFRICAN MASTER’S DEGREE IN CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Purpose: This workshop is aimed at introducing the revised Southern African Master’s degree in Climate Change and Sustainable Development curriculum framework developed in 2022 by Climate Change and Sustainable Development field experts from various universities in the SADC region, to academic planners, curriculum designers, programme leaders and managers, academic staff at SARUA-affiliated universities who wish to implement the revised Master’s degree programme in Climate Change and Sustainable Development

The course is for you if you are an academic working on curriculum in climate change and sustainable development, an academic or administrative manager or a curriculum expert.

Workshop 2: Teaching & Learning
TEACHING AND LEARNING CONSIDERATIONS RELATED TO THE CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK OF THE REVISED SOUTHERN AFRICAN MASTER’S DEGREE IN CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Purpose: The purpose of this workshop is to: Empower academics from SARUA-affiliated universities to understand how the revised curriculum framework of the Master’s degree in Climate Change and Sustainable Development can be used to develop a suitable programme design that addresses institutional readiness and disciplinary and academic achievement considerations (as explained in Workshop 1).
Provide guidance to academics from SARUA-affiliated universities on developing an appropriate teaching and learning strategy for this programme with due consideration of principles of good teaching and learning practice in higher education as well as contextual factors, including the place, pace, mode, provisions and methods of teaching, and the learning process undertaken by students.

The course is for you if you are an academic working on curriculum in climate change and sustainable development, an academic or administrative manager or a curriculum expert.

Workshop 3: Assessment
ASSESSMENT CONSIDERATIONS RELATED TO THE CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK OF THE REVISED SOUTHERN AFRICAN MASTER’S DEGREE IN CLIMATE CHANGE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Purpose: Empower academics from SARUA-affiliated universities to understand how the programme design and teaching and learning strategy inform the assessment strategy for the institution-specific programme.
Develop a comprehensive assessment strategy for this programme, including work-integrated learning modalities to foster integration of theory and practice.
Develop assessment rubrics for assessing a Master’s degree research proposal and a Master’s degree research project.

The course is for you if you are an academic working on curriculum in climate change and sustainable development, an academic or administrative manager or a curriculum expert.

Date: 5 April 2023 @ 14:00-17:30.

Short courses

Short course 1: ‘Foundations of climate change and sustainable development’.

This course is for you if you are a government official, member of an NPO or in any decision making position where climate change plays a leading role.

BIOS OF FACILITATORS

Marianne Bester

Marianne Bester is currently employed by Stellenbosch University (SU) and works in the Centre for Academic Planning and Quality Assurance in the Division for Learning and Teaching Enhancement as an advisor for programme review and renewal. She works collaboratively with academics in ten faculties on reviewing, re-designing and renewing academic programmes at the institution. She is also a Council member of Boland TVET College in the Western Cape, South Africa.

Before her appointment at SU, she headed the Curriculum Development Unit in the Centre for Higher Education Development at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). In this position, she was responsible for reviewing and renewing approximately 90 pre-HEQSF qualifications (defined as Category A and Category B qualifications by CHE) and developing approximately 70 new HEQSF-aligned qualifications. She advised on developing a range of HEQSF qualification types, including Certificates, Diplomas, Advanced diplomas, Professional degrees (Engineering), Honours degrees (Education), Postgraduate diplomas and Master’s degrees. During her time at CPUT, she was also the head of an academic department for 17 years. She established the first Technology Station in Clothing and Textiles (funded by the Technology Innovation Agency of SA) in 2001.

She holds a Higher Diploma in Education (University of Free State); Magister Technologiae in Education (Cape Technikon); Master of Philosophy in Higher Education (cum laude) (SU), and a PhD in Higher Education (Curriculum Studies) (SU). She has authored and co-authored several publications and presented nationally and internationally at conferences on curriculum-related matters.

Prof René Pellissier  

René Pellissier heads the SARUA Climate Change and Sustainable Development programme at SARUA.  She led the design and development of the programme including the development of the transdisciplinary curriculum for the master’s programme in Climate Change and Sustainable Development. She is Professor of Research and Innovation and works as strategist, researcher, and systems engineer in the international arena based on her extensive international experience across the globe at universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and across Africa.  She is a futurist and consultant specializing in the world of future work based on the evolution of technology and the resultant societal changes and needs.  René holds an MSc in Mathematical Statistics, an MBA and a PhD in Systems Engineering.

Desiree Scholtz

Desiree Scholtz holds the position of Assistant Dean: Teaching and Learning at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). Previously held positions at CPUT include Curriculum Specialist at Fundani CHED, Faculty Teaching and Learning Co-ordinator, and National Benchmark Test Co-ordinator. Given these positions, her interests in higher education focuses primarily on student learning, staff development and curriculum development at institutional and faculty levels. These areas of interest are evident in formal studies and several research publications. Having graduated with language majors in undergraduate studies, this provided the impetus for further studies in second language acquisition and academic literacies for student success. Her academic studies trajectory was informed by the need to conduct research to improve and inform practice. Postgraduate studies include a Master of Education in Educational Administration Planning and Social Policy, a Master of Philosophy in Second Language Studies and a Doctor of Education which explored the relevance of the National Benchmark Test in academic literacy for diploma programmes of study.  She currently participates in national and institutional initiatives on staff development and curriculum development.
