SUMMARY:Dean and deputy dean leadership in higher education in SADC: Changing roles in changing contexts
DESCRIPTION:Across Southern Africa\, higher education stands at the forefront of societal transformation\, social development\, research innovation and knowledge creation. Deans and deputy deans play a pivotal role in driving this vision\, as academic leaders\, institutional stewards\, and strategic change agents. Yet\, the transition from academic to dean\, from manager to leader\, and from research to implementation\, often brings a complex shift in identity\, responsibility and expectations. This shift calls for intentional leadership development that is grounded in dynamic context\, community and clarity of purpose. \nThe SARUA Dean and Deputy Dean Leadership Programme responds to this need. We are hosting a focused two-day development programme designed to empower deans and deputy deans to lead confidently\, think systemically and act collaboratively in shaping the higher education landscape across the SADC region. \nThis programme is part of the SARUA Leadership Programmes offering\, which develops and supports senior leaders across Southern African higher education institutions. It equips participants with the competencies\, confidence\, networks and insights required to embolden institutional leadership and advance the region’s higher education ecosystem\, driving regional and African development\, research excellence and innovation. \nConceptual foundation \nHigher education leadership is central to Africa’s development agenda. SUMMARY:Leading Digital Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Description \nThis programme is designed to strengthen leadership capacity and advance digital transformation within higher education institutions across the SADC region. Delivered through a series of 10 two-hour virtual sessions\, it focuses on the strategic role of executive leaders in managing technology-enabled business transformation. The programme addresses regional challenges and opportunities\, emphasising practical management responsibilities and fostering collaboration within and across institutions. Participants will build a shared understanding of what digital transformation means in a university context\, how to focus on business value\, prioritise strategic opportunities\, apply the discipline of investment return and integrate the human aspects of change into capability planning. \nBy the end of the programme\, participants will be equipped to initiate\, guide and manage digital transformation initiatives\, create diverse institutional teams and prioritise transformation based on achievable quick wins. The approach is practical and reflective\, encouraging consideration of local contexts and reinforcing that digital transformation is a continual journey rather than a one-off project.
