THE World Academic Summit 2026:

29 September – 1 October 2026 | Cape Town, South Africa

The THE World Academic Summit 2026 will bring together global higher education, research and policy leaders at the University of Cape Town for three days of discussion and exchange around the future of universities.
Under the theme ‘Knowledge, justice and futures: Universities in the age of intelligence’, the summit will explore how universities can respond to rapid technological, social and environmental change while advancing inclusive, sustainable and just futures.

Key themes include the future purpose of universities, inclusive education, ethical leadership, AI and digital inequality, financial sustainability, research and innovation, and the role of universities in society.

The 2026 summit marks the first time the event will be hosted on the African continent, providing an opportunity for higher education leaders from across Africa and beyond to engage in the global conversation.

REFA Exchange Seminar: Reimagining Internationalisation through African Storytelling

How might African storytelling offer new ways of thinking about internationalisation in higher education?

The next Rethinking Economic Futures for Africa (REFA) Exchange Seminar will explore this question through a conversation led by Professor Bolanle Simeon-Fayomi of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Under the theme “Sankofa, Ubuntu, and the Griot’s Circle: Reimagining Internationalisation through African Storytelling”, the session will consider how African concepts and storytelling traditions can challenge and reshape conventional approaches to internationalisation.

The seminar will bring together researchers, practitioners and policy actors to engage with the ideas presented and explore their implications for higher education policy and practice.
