For ten weeks, I had the privilege of attending the HERizon Africa Leadership Programme under SARUA 2026 – an experience that was both valuable and unforgettable. When I joined, I knew little about SARUA and nothing about HERizon, but I left with lasting lessons and meaningful connections.
The programme’s focus was leadership, and what made it unique was the space it created: strangers became colleagues, colleagues became friends. We shared experiences, learned from one another and grew together. The presentations were captivating, offering insights that will stay with me for life.
Among the many lessons, I discovered that good leaders listen attentively, communicate clearly and foster teamwork. Group discussions were especially enriching, as participants from diverse backgrounds shared perspectives shaped by their countries and contexts. Higher education, I realised, is a complex and dynamic field.
On stress management, I learned the importance of staying calm (though not easy for me), evaluating situations carefully and making thoughtful decisions, rather than turning to unhealthy habits. Exercise, too, emerged as a vital part of healing and balance, reminding me to always make time for it.
As an administrator, the training lifted my confidence and motivated me to refine my leadership skills. One highlight was sharing my own leadership journey. From a young age, whether in school or church, I embraced leadership roles and volunteered in my circles. Those experiences shaped me into the leader I am today, someone who thrives in the driver’s seat always and embraces learning on the job.
Learning from my colleague from Zambia was another highlight. We plan to collaborate on publishing a paper together – a partnership I look forward to nurturing. We had participants from eight different SADC countries and now I have a network that spans our entire region, helping me with much more appreciation for our region, what we need to do – collectively – to help our communities thrive.
The programme was truly amazing. I only wish it had lasted longer. To the facilitators: Birgit and Phiwo, and all the facilitators, you deserve flowers for your dedication and excellence. Well done, and thank you for making the experience not only educational but fun. HERizon, please come again!
